Ahmed Legrouri

Ahmed Legrouri, Dean of the Al Akhawayn University School of Science and Engineering, has been named a member of the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC). Among the GEDC’s upcoming events are its second conference at Peking University in Beijing, China, from October 20-23, 2011, and the ASEE Global Colloquium, to be held in Shanghai from October 24-27, 2011.

Lamia Bazir

Al Akhawayn University student Lamia Bazir (Class of 2012) has been awarded the 2011 Resolution Fellowship from the Social Venture Challenge, which comes with a prize of $1,500 to be used to launch a social project in the Moroccan Middle Atlas village of Adghagh. Bazir’s project, the construction of a public bath, aims at empowering women in the fight against poverty and enabling them to stimulate local development.

Christian Jussen

Al Akhawayn University School of Science and Engineering faculty met on March 24, 2011, with Christian Jussen, a consultant with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ) in Morocco. The discussions focused on GIZ’s efforts to create a university research network on renewable energies in Morocco, the contribution of Al Akhawayn to wind energy projects in Morocco, and possible cooperation with a new European Union-funded renewable energies project. Al Akhawayn and the GIZ agreed to work together to offer internships to students, cooperate with German corporations, involve Al Akhawayn faculty in GIZ projects, and more.

Abdellah Chekayri

Abdellah Chekayri, Associate Professor of Arabic and coordinator of the Al Akhawayn University Arabic Language and North African Studies Program, has just published a new book, entitled An Introduction to Moroccan Arabic and Culture(Georgetown University Press, 2011). Click here to view the descriptive flier about the book.

Nicolas Hamelin-Jack Kalpakian-Connell Monette-Houda Aznay

Al Akhawayn University faculty members Nicolas Hamelin, Assistant Professor of Marketing Management in the School of Business Administration, Jack Kalpakian, Associate Professor of International Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Connell Monette, Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, together with Al Akhawayn alumna Houda Aznay (MBA, Class of 2008), have published a new article on “Trigger Factors of Terrorism: Social Marketing Analysis as a Tool for Security Studies – a Moroccan Case Study,” in the International Journal of Euro-Mediterranean Studies. The entire journal can be viewed at, and Hamelin, Kalpakian, and Monette’s article can be viewed at
