Course Structure and Requirements

The course will combine lectures with in-class discussion based on the assigned readings in the textbook and additional primary source readings available on the course website. The lectures will help organize, summarize, and outline material into principal themes; the discussions will allow the students to interact with, evaluate, and debate the issues raised by the readings and in lectures.

The course requirements include: regular attendance and participation in class, four quizzes, a mid-term exam, and a final exam.

Grading percentages:

Class Participation 20%
Quizzes (4) 40%
Mid-Term 20%
Final 20%

Participation is an essential part of your grade and includes attendance and participation in class discussion, including writing short responses to some of the readings. More than four absences reduce the participation grade by half and more than seven absences reduce it to 10%.
