This course comprises three modules:

  • Module 1: Studying at University
  • Module 2: Reasoning and Research
  • Module 3: Writing an Informed Argument
Purpose and Objectives of the Course

Skills for Learning and Research (SSK1201) is a foundation course in academic skills development.  It introduces the study skills required by students to succeed in a merit-based educational system.  It presents concepts of critical thinking that students will need throughout their university careers and beyond.  It engenders a holistic understanding of the nature of learning, assessment and reasoning that students can apply to their entire course of studies.  Students will understand academic expectations; be trained to take responsibility for their own learning; develop the ability to structure their time and their work and learn how to use academic resources effectively.

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • structure time according to determined objectives
  • organize work for task completion
  • apply different learning strategies to different learning tasks
  • ask appropriate questions
  • effectively remember, explain, apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate
  • understand what is involved in rational discourse
  • use academic resources online and offline effectively
  • develop an informed academic argument
  • use strategies to avoid plagiarism

Attendance Policy

Your teacher is required by the university to enter every absence into the university database regardless of whether it is an excused or unexcused absence.  Unexcused absences will have the following impact on your grades:

          1 absence -    --
          2 absences-   oral warning

          3 absences-   written warning

          4 absences-   withdrawal/failure

Lateness Policy

Students who are late will be marked “late” in the attendance register; more than 3 tardies will result in lowered teacher assessment grades.  This can make the difference between an "A" and a "B", or a "B" and a "C".

Makeups (exams and quizzes)

For students with excused absences, makeup tests will be scheduled at the convenience of the teacher and student.  The student is responsible for scheduling this makeup.  Students with unexcused absences will receive a score of 0 on the test or quiz.  Classes will not be rescheduled for any reason. Students who miss a class for whatever reason are responsible for the material covered during that class.
