Catherine Owens has been teaching, writing course materials, evaluating curricula, training teachers and designing computer based learning programs since 1983. She has a B.A in Linguistics, a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, and a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics from Concordia University in Montréal. Her teaching experience has been in Canadian, Japanese, Thai, and Indonesian universities prior to Al Akhawayn.

Dr. Hassan Belhiah received his PhD in English Language and Linguistics in May 2005 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he also completed his MA in Applied English Linguistics thanks to a Fulbright scholarship awarded to him by the Moroccan-American Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange. While in the US, Dr. Hassan Belhiah taught English courses to a wide array of learners, including international students, native speakers of American English, graduate students as well as student teachers. Dr. Belhiah's research interests include TESOL, second language composition, conversation analysis, and nonverbal communication.

Dr. Awatif Boudihaj joined CAD in August 2003. She got her doctorate degree in Education from Leeds University in UK. She has taught at the tertiary level both in Saudi Arabia and in the Sultanate of Oman. Her research interests involve writing, discourse analysis, needs analysis, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and developing students' research skills.

Robert Burgess was born in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada. He studied Political Science at the University of Victoria, Teaching English as a Second Language at Carleton University and received a Master
's in Education from Temple University in Japan. He has lived and worked in Canada, Tanzania, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Morocco. His academic interests include curriculum design and materials development including computer aided learning materials. He is currently a faculty member of the Center for Academic Development and Director of the Office of International Programs.

Chad Hope received his M.A. in Middle East Studies from the University of Washington in Seattle. He studied Arabic in Egypt and Jordan during his graduate studies and has spent nine of the past ten years teaching and learning in Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Morocco. His primary interests involve the relationship between spoken dialects and the social and historical factors responsible for their unique flavors.

Dore Michelut, Lecturer

Dore Michelut has lived for extensive periods in Italy and in Canada. She did her undergraduate studies at the University of Florence, Italy; and received a Master’s in Applied Communication from Royal Roads University in Victoria, Canada. For many years she taught Creative Writing and wrote poetry and prose; she has published four books and a number of articles in literary journals. Between 2001 and 2005 she taught at the University of Wenzhou, China, where she founded and fostered a student newspaper. She has always been interested in the fertile territory between languages, and in all aspects of communication.

Robert (Bob) Mittan holds an M.A. in ESL from the University of Arizona, where he did additional coursework in rhetoric and composition, specializing in teaching writing to non-native speakers of English. Before joining AUI, he taught composition, study skills, and technical writing courses at the University of Arizona, Casper College, and the University of Wyoming/Casper College Upper Division Center. He also served as Director of the Casper College-UW/CC Writing Center for eight years. His research interests include collaborative learning and teaching and writing across the curriculum; he has co-authored two textbooks and several scholarly articles and conference presentations.

Dr. Mobasheri most recently worked at the University of Iowa where she completed her Ph.D. in Counselor Education-Student Development. She has had experience advising and teaching in Iran, Abu Dhabi, Japan, and the U.S. In 1995-96, she enjoyed a Fulbright research year in Rabat. Dr. Mobasheri has an M.A. in Counseling from the University of Colorado and a B.A. in French Studies from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Areas of special interest include career advising and development, addictions and eating disorders, and brief solution-focused therapy. She loves to travel, read, drink coffee and has three children, ages 3, 14, and 18.

Birute Richardson has recently arrived from many years of teaching in Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, the Sultanate of Oman, and England. Her main area of interest is the impact of first language logic on the acquisition of second languages. Other interests include comparative literatures, art and music.
