Directions

Working with your group, write:

  1. a situation (including conversation and nonverbal interaction) that illustrates a specific aspect of interpersonal communication that your group has been assigned for this project.
  2. a brief explanation of your conversation in which you identify the specific aspect illustrated, explain that aspect in your own words, and describe how that aspect of interpersonal communication affects the people, the relationship(s), and the communication.

During the final exam period, present the situation for your peers and two instructors by “acting out” the situation you have written. Your goal is to illustrate the specific aspect of interpersonal communication in such a way that your audience will recognize the idea and clearly see how it occurs in everyday situations. Finally, be ready to answer questions about it from your audience.

Guidelines for Creating the Conversation and Discussion

  1. Choose a group of 3 or 4 people with whom you will work.
  2. Your instructor will assign to each group a specific aspect of interpersonal communication from one of these units we have studied:
    • Concepts and Strategies
    • Listening and Empathy
    • Interpersonal Conflict
    • The Self in Interpersonal Communication
  3. Create a conversation that illustrates the specific aspect that you have been assigned.
    • Each member of the conversation must speak at least 2 times.
    • The entire conversation and discussion must not exceed 8 minutes TOTAL.
    • The conversation and your actions while presenting it must clearly show your audience the relationship of the people involved in the interaction.
  4. Write a short discussion that answers these questions about the situation and conversation:
    • What specific aspect of interpersonal communication does your situation and conversation illustrate?
    • How or where does it show this?
    • What does this specific aspect of interpersonal communication mean to the members of your group (in your own words)?
    • What effect(s) does this aspect have on the people, relationships, and communication illustrated?
  5. Hand in your typed conversation and discussion no later than Friday, May 12.

Guidelines for Presenting the Conversation

  1. Present—“act out”—your situation and conversation for an audience of your classmates and two CAD instructors. (You will be provided a table and two chairs to use as you wish. If you need other equipment, you must provide it.)
  2. You may use copies of your conversation as a script; however, you must effectively convey the communication in the situation. (Do not merely read the conversation!)
  3. Answer questions about the situation and interpersonal communication from your audience.

Suggestions

  • Choose your group carefully! This is an exam. You must work closely together to plan, write, practice, and present successfully.
  • Focus on the specific aspect of interpersonal communication you have been assigned. Identify a focused situation that will illustrate it. The larger the topic, the more difficult it will be to present it clearly in the time you have. FOCUS!
  • Develop your situation and conversation based upon real situations that you have experienced or witnessed and that your audience will recognize and relate to.
  • Practice, practice, practice.
