SSK 1204 - Applied Independent Learning Methods

Project

SSK 1204 requires three major pieces of writing, two essays of theme related prose and one project in the second half of the semester. The essay instructions and descriptions are found on the Essay 1 & 2 link. The Project is described here. The assignment dates and deadlines are as below.

The Group Project

SSK 1204 requires that each individual student select a theme topic on some aspect or issue related to the course reading topic. As the course progresses, students should be considering points of interest in the topics being discussed. The project will demand extensive reading, beyond the course texts, so that students can compile a variety of sources in support of their final paper.

The group part of this project comes in the thematic grouping of individual papers into a journal. Student writers will be grouped according to the relatedness of their paper topics and will use the final 5 weeks of the semester assembling their research, working on their writing, doing revisions and preparing their presentations as a group. They will submit final drafts collected in one portfolio, with an overview describing the journal contents. Cohesion is an important component of this exercise.

Purpose of the Group Project

The purpose of this project is to give students the opportunity:

  • to engage in serious academic research utilizing both individual and group effort

  • to produce and publish an academic journal of articles related by theme

  • to design written collections using an Editorial Board

  • to increase their academic independence

Process

The major difference between this course and other CAD courses is that, while the process approach is required for the completion of the project, the process itself is not graded. Students become independent by following a set of steps on their own in preparation of a final product. Thus, the process is seen as important and will help with project planning, but it is your responsibility.

The project is designed to give students considerable flexibility and freedom to select the theme of their journal. The only requirements are that the journal articles relate to course content, and follow the guidelines.

Requirements

  • Teams will consist of 3 members.
  • The journal will contain 3 articles focussing on different aspects of the same theme.
  • Articles written by individual team members must go through a review process and be approved for publication by the team.
