Purpose and Objectives of the Course

The course requires students to practice and apply all of the skills learned in the CAD curriculum. Students will demonstrate through individual and team project work that they have a basic mastery of study and research skills. Students are expected to work in a self-directed manner, taking responsibility for their success. The teacher will act as a coach and facilitator. Evaluation will be based on individual and team assignments submitted during the course.

Prerequisites

Students must have successfully completed (with a grade of C or above) SSK 1201 and SSK 1203 before enrolling in SSK 1204. It is strongly advised that students complete Language Center courses before taking SSK 1204. English Composition 2 may be taken concurrently with SSK 1204.

It is recommended that SSK 1204 and SSK 1202 not be taken concurrently as both demand considerable effort and work from students.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Analyse the structure and meaning of complex texts
  • Identify a topic worthy of academic research
  • Find, evaluate, and make notes from a variety of academic sources
  • Produce academic writing following APA guidelines for format and citation
  • Plan and carry out effective teamwork, both cooperatively and collaboratively
  • Analyze arguments critically
  • Synthesize, summarise, and paraphrase academic information
  • Develop academic information processing skills from previous CAD and Language Center courses.

Attendance Policy

Your teacher is required by the university to enter every absence into the university database regardless of whether it is an excused or unexcused absence.  Unexcused absences will have the following impact on your grades:

1 absence -    --
2 absences-   oral warning
3 absences-   written warning
4 absences-   withdrawal/failure

Students who are late will be marked “late” in the attendance register.

Standards

Students will be rewarded for excellent attendance, and punctual, neat, and complete assignments. At a minimum, students are expected to:

  • Take responsibility for downloading and printing required course materials
  • Produce required work as hard copies to bring to class as needed
  • Take notes in class and while reading and store them in a notebook
  • Ensure all written work complies with the APA formatting specifications
  • Get class materials, notes, and other information from a classmate for any missed class periods
  • Hand in assignments on time
  • Submit work of a high academic standard
  • Use argumentation and analysis as taught in SSK 1201, to achieve deeper and more sophisticated essays

Plagiarism

SSK 1204 is the course in which you can demonstrate that you now know what is and is not plagiarism. As an independent learner and user of academic resources, you are responsible for every word that you write and speak in an academic context. This responsibility follows you throughout your academic and professional career.
The consequence of this responsibility is that if you do not fully cite and provide references for every borrowed or paraphrased idea, phrase, sentence, song lyric, picture, poem or story in your writing and speaking, you will fail this course. Your training in SSK 1201, 1203 and 1202 has given you the tools to prevent this problem. Use them.
