save and organize important links for a research project
export, import, and print a collection of links
Instructions
To use a web browser effectively for academic work, you need to
be able to collect and organize links that you have discovered.
On a shared network (such as the AUI LAN), you will need to know
how to export/import your personal collection of links to/from your
student partition or floppy a disk.
Follow these instructions in Internet Explorer to start your personal
collection of links. You will save this collection to your network
partition and add to it throughout this module.
Save and Organize Links
Open Favorites by clicking the icon or pulling down the menu.
(If you click the icon, the Favorites will open in a window next
to the browser window.)
Choose Organize Favorites. Then, choose Create Folder.
Name the new folder My
Sites. (There will probably already be some Favorites
and there may even be some other folders within Favorites.)
In the Address: bar of Internet Explorer, type in the URL for
your favorite search engine.
Once this site opens, choose Add to Favorites.
Give this site a name (or keep the one that comes up).
Choose Create In and navigate to the folder you just created
called My Sites.
Repeat steps 4-8 for each of the following locations:
the AUI home page
the SSK 1203 home page
the home page of any other course you are taking this semester
(if they exist)
the home page of at least one other search engine
You may continue adding any other links for web sites that you
frequently visit. However, if you add many links, you should consider
organizing them into more sub-folders within your My
Sites folder.
Export a Collection of Links
Remember that the collection of links you save is stored on
the computer you are currently using. So, to make your own collection
of links available to you elsewhere, you will need to export it
to your network partition. Follow these instructions in Internet
Explorer.
Choose File/Import and Export... The Import/Export wizard will
open.
Under Choose an action to perform, choose Export Favorites.
Choose the folder My
Sites as the Source Folder.
Choose Export to a File or Address; then, click Browse to navigate
to your network partition. (If you wish, you may create a new
folder in your network partition in which to store your collection
of links.)
Once you have navigated to the location where you want to save
your collection of links, notice that the file will be named bookmark.htm.
(This is the default file name that Internet Explorer will give
this file. You may change this file name, but make sure
that you save it with the extension .htm
so that it appears as a web page file.)
Remember: You will have to Import this collection of links onto
any computer where you want to use it. You can then add to, organize,
or delete any saved links and then export the file again to keep
a current set of your personal collected links.
Import a Collection of Links
Open Internet Explorer and choose File/Import and Export...
Under Choose an action to perform, choose Import Favorites.
Choose Import from a File or Address; then, click Browse to
navigate to your network partition and find the file bookmark.htm.
(If you have named this file something else, you will need to
remember this file name.)
Choose where you want your collection of links to be imported
to. (If you choose the Favorites folder, your collection will
be added as a new folder within Favorites.)
You can now use, add to, organize, and delete any of the links
while you are using Internet Explorer.
Remember: If you have made any changes to your collection, be sure
to export the new collection before you exit Internet Explorer
and log off from the computer. (In most computer labs, any changes
made to Favorites are erased as soon as you log off.)
Print a Collection of Links
Sometimes it's valuable to have a hard copy backup of the links
you have collected. However, depending on the way you choose to
print, you can create either a list of the names of the sites
or a list of the actual URLs. Here are two ways to print.
To Print a List of the Site Names in Your Collection of Links
Choose File/Open and then use Browse to navigate to the file
containing your collection of links.
This page should look like a "normal" web page, with
the names of sites you have saved being links you can click on.
To print this page like this, choose File/Print and print as
you regularly do.
To Print a List of the URLS in Your Collection of Links
Follow steps 1 and 2 above.
Choose File/Print.
On the Print popup, choose Print table of links.
This method will first print the list as above. Then, it will print
a table containing a list of the names for the sites and the URL
that each one links to.
