Module 2: Using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Academic Coursework

Task 9: Tabulating Data and Creating Charts III

Name: _______________________ Instructor: __________________ Section: ________

Objectives

In this task you will learn to:

  • Practice building Excel spreadsheets based on collated data.
  • Practice building Excel charts to display the data.
  • Practice exporting Excel spreadsheets and charts to Word.

Instructions

You are writing a paper on mobile phone use at AUI. You have completed a survey (a copy of the survey appears in the file survey.doc) and have started to draft a paper (which appears in the file mobile.doc) to report the results.

Activity 1

Open the phones.xls workbook that you created and saved before. Open the third spreadsheet by clicking on the tab labelled Sheet 3 in the bottom of the Excel window. This spreadsheet should be blank.

Build a spreadsheet comparing the level of student satisfaction with the service providers Meditel and Maroc Telecom. Format and label the spreadsheet and chart appropriately.

This activity refers to data collected in questions seven and nine of the mobile use survey. The collated data is as follows.

From this data you should build an Excel spreadsheet table. Format the spreadsheet to match the table below.

Table 3: Satisfaction with Service Provider

Service provider Extremely satisfied Very satisfied Satisfied Somewhat satisfied Not satisfied
Meditel 0 2 4 1 0
Maroc Telecom 1 1 2 1 0

n=12

Name this spreadsheet Satisfaction by typing this name on the tab at the bottom of the Excel window. Save the workbook. (You will use this same workbook for several more tasks.)

Activity 2

Build a chart (using the data from your Satisfaction spreadsheet) showing the levels of satisfaction of phone users. Format the chart to the following specifications. Follow the instructions in Tips for Formatting Chart Elements Using Excel.
