In this task you will learn to:

  • build a table in a spreadsheet
  • insert formulas
  • insert functions
  • adjust cell height and width

Instructions

Activity 1

Following your instructor's directions and demonstration, build the following table in Microsoft Excel, including the necessary formulas and functions.

Subject Final Grade SCH Value Value of the Grade Quality Points Earned GPA
SSK1201

A

2 4 8
SSK1202 B 2 3 6
SSK1203 C
SSK1204 D
SSK1205 F
Totals   4   14
  • At AUI the letter grades hold the following values.

A = 4 points B = 3 points C = 2 points D = 1 point F = 0 points

  • Courses hold a semester credit hour (SCH) value.

Example: SSK1203: Computer Skills for Independent Learning holds a SCH value of 2 credits.

  • Formula: Quality Points Earned is calculated by multiplying the SCH Value by the Value of the Grade.

Example: C2*D2

  • Function: Total Quality Points Earned is calculated as the sum of the column. Use the Sigma icon on the toolbar to insert this function.

Example: =Sum(E2:E6)

  • Formula: Grade point average is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned by the total SCH value.

Example: E7/C7 (The correct GPA is 14/4 or 3.5)

Activity 2

  1. Use what you have learned and your personal data on the courses you are currently taking to create a simple spreadsheet to calculate your grade point average.
  2. Print the result and put it in your portfolio.
