Module 3: Finding and Evaluating Information on the World Wide Web

Project 3: Finding and Evaluating Academic Materials

Description

The goal of this project is to display the ability to use search techniques to gather and critically evaluate information from the World Wide Web for work on an academic topic. It also requires the presentation of a reference list formatted to follow APA guidelines. This project is worth 15% of your final grade.

Instructions

You are working on an academic project in which you must provide a range of possible answers to the following question:

Sections 1 & 6: How much of a threat is avian bird flu to Moroccans?

Sections 2 & 3: How should Morocco improve its tourism industry?

Sections 4 & 7: How can research and scientific development help Morocco?

Sections 5 & 8: How do the countries of the Maghrib Union compare socially and economically?

Part 1

1. Make a list of at least 4 different search queries that you plan to use to find documents related to your work. Be sure to identify how you plan to use Advanced Search techniques for any of these queries. Briefly explain (in one or two sentences for each query) your reasons for the way you have designed each query (e.g., how you chose the words, why you put them in a particular order, how you limited the scope of your search).

2. Run each of the queries you designed in step 1 using any search engine(s) of your choice. For each query that you run, print out a page showing the first 10 results.

3. Save a link to each of these results pages in your Favorites in a folder named Project 3. You may need to return to these results later.

4. After reviewing these results lists, write a short paragraph explaining whether or not you believe you should try additional or different search queries and why.

Part 2

5. From any of the results lists you created in Part 1, choose at least 4 individual items that you believe will provide useful material for your work. Do not open and look at these items at this time! Base your decision only on what you can see in the results list. Highlight the 4 items you have chosen on the printouts and give each one a letter to identify it (A, B, C, D). (If you wish, you may copy and paste these 4 items into your project document. If you do so, be sure to copy the entire item from the results list.)

6. For each of the items you have chosen and labeled A-D, write a short explanation of why you believe it will provide useful material for your project. This explanation must rely only on what you can tell from the results list!

Part 3

7. Using what you have learned in Module 3, find 4 different types of documents that provide suitable material for your project. (These may include items you have used in Parts 1 and 2; but, you may also need to continue your search until you have found all that you need!) These are some examples of the types of documents you may find:

  • online dictionary or encyclopedia entry
  • non-text information (statistics, maps)
  • online version of a newspaper or magazine article
  • online research report

8. Build a reference list including an APA reference for each of these 4 sources. (You will see a set of example APA references by following the link to APA Reference Formats for Online Documents from the Module 3 Resources area.)

9. Write a brief statement about each of these 4 sources that explains:

  • why you believe this source is appropriate for an academic project
  • how you believe this source can contribute to the project you have been assigned

Formatting Guidelines

Type and print out your work using Microsoft Word. Follow the standard APA page setup and formatting guidelines that you have learned, including creating a title page. Paper clip all of the pages together (your instructor will need to separate the pages to read and evaluate your project), including the printouts of your results lists and the first page of each document in your references.

Hand in the following items, following your instructor's directions:

  • a paper copy of your results from Parts 1, 2, and 3
  • paper copies of your results lists (first 10 items)
  • paper copies of the first page of each item used in your reference list
  • an electronic copy of your work on Parts 1, 2, and 3
    filename: _________________________
  • an electronic copy of your favorites file for this project
    filename: _________________________
