SSK 1202 - Critical Reading and Problem Solving Process

Students of SSK1202 are responsible for completing a problem solution project.   Following are the tasks and worksheets to guide students through five steps in the research process.

Step 1: Analyzing the Problem

Objectives
In this step you will learn to:

  • Analyze a real world problem

Task 1: Analyze your problem solution topic.

Submit a copy of the research question worksheet to your teacher for comment. Keep a copy of your work in your project portfolio.

Step 2: Gathering Information

Objectives
In this step you will learn to:

  • Analyze a problem
  • Collect information from the library, internet and personal communication
  • Write an introduction
  • Write a literature review
  • Build a reference list
  • Develop teamwork

  • Problem analysis

Task 1: Draft the Introduction section.

Complete the tasksheet "Writing an Introduction"(Download)

Complete the "Introduction Workplan" (Download)

Submit a copy of your Introduction and the "Introduction Workplan" to your teacher for comment and grading. Keep a copy of your work in your project portfolio.

Task 2: Draft the Literature Review section.

Find a minimum of ten (10) sources of information for your project. Evaluate the sources for utility. Take notes from these sources for use in your Literature Review.

Task 3: Draft a reference list. 

Read "What is a Reference List"

Submit a copy of your Refereence List to your teacher for comment and grading.

Step 3: Collecting Data

Objectives
In this task you will learn to:

  • Design and evaluate data collection tools
  • Build a data gathering tool (interviews/questionnaires/test/observation)
  • Collect research data (run an interview/questionnaire/test/observation

Task 1: Develop and draft the research design (methods and procedure).

Submit a copy of your Research Design and the "Design Workplan" to your teacher for comment and grading. Keep a copy of your work in your project portfolio.

Task 2: Develop and draft the Subjects section

Step 4: Presenting and Interpreting Data

Objectives
In this step you will learn to:

  • Analyse, evaluate, synthsize and present tabular data

In this step you will use the following skills:

  • Critical reading
  • Critical writing
  • Teambuilding

Task 1: Tabulate the data collected.


Task 2: Draft your results section (present your data in textual form).

Submit a copy of your Results section and the "Results Workplan" to your teacher for comment and grading. Keep a copy of your work in your project portfolio.


Task 3: Build necessary tables, charts and graphs (from tabulated data) to
          support the text.


Task 4: Draft your discussion and conclusion section.

Task 1: Draft your abstract.

Task 2: Proofread, edit and format your completed project.

Submit the final draft of your paper (paper copy and electronic copy) and your portfolio to your teacher for comment and grading.
