This course comprises three modules:

  • Module 1: Studying at University
  • Module 2: Learning Through Research
  • Module 3: Writing an Argumentative Essay

Purpose and Objectives of the Course

Skills for Learning and Research (SSK1201) is a foundation course in academic skills development.  It introduces the study skills required by students to succeed in a merit-based educational system.  It presents concepts of critical thinking that students will need throughout their university careers and beyond.  It engenders a holistic understanding of the nature of learning, assessment and reasoning that students can apply to their entire course of studies.  Students will be asked to read and respond to academic articles, write both extensively and intensively, engage in academic discussions, and improve their note-taking and use of terminology.  Students will be trained to take responsibility for their own learning, and will develop the ability to use academic resources effectively.

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • analyse written academic material
  • evaluate their own academic skills
  • use academic resources effectively
  • think critically about academic and real world issues
  • present an argument on an issue of importance
  • manage their time
  • use strategies to avoid plagiarism
  • take and prepare for tests more effectively

Attendance Policy

Your teacher is required by the university to enter every absence into the university database regardless of whether it is an excused or unexcused absence.  Unexcused absences will have the following impact on your grades:

          1 absence -    --
          2 absences-   oral warning

          3 absences-   written warning

          4 absences-   withdrawal/failure

Lateness Policy

Students who are late will be marked “late” in the attendance register, and more than 3 latenesses will result in lowered teacher assessment grades.  This can make the difference between an "A" and a "B", or a "B" and a "C".

Makeups (exams and quizzes)

For students with excused absences, makeup tests will be scheduled at the convenience of the teacher and student.  The student is responsible for scheduling this makeup.  Students with unexcused absences will receive a score of 0 on the test or quiz.  Classes will not be rescheduled for any reason. Students who miss a class for whatever reason are responsible for the material covered during that class.
