THE UNIVERSITY OF JOENSUU
History
The University of Joensuu was established in 1969. The University
has since grown to have six faculties. The University of Joensuu
is one of the secrets for the vitality of the city and of
all North Karelia. Diversified international cooperation in
science, industry and commerce benefits the whole region.

Location
Joensuu University is located in Finland, a Nordic democracy
with 5.2 million inhabitants. Finland is the seventh largest
country in Europe. The capital of Finland is Helsinki. The official
languages of Finland are Finnish and Swedish.
Joensuu University lies at the heart of North Karelia, the easternmost
province of Finland. Joensuu means ‘mouth of the river’
and true to its name Joensuu straddles the Pielisjoki River.
Joensuu is a bustling city of 52,291 inhabitants and has a wide
range of offerings to international students.

Strengths
The University relies on its strengths and areas of expertise.
Among the university’s strengths is a multi-disciplinary
teacher education program, preparing teachers for all levels
of the educational system, research and teaching pertaining
to forests, other renewable resources and the environment, and
proficiency in the development and application of high technology.
The University is also a recognized centre for research on the
social and cultural development of the European peripheral areas
and border regions.

Academic Programs
Academic programs at Joensuu University include six faculties
and nine independent units. The University offers undergraduate
and graduate degree in eight different fields:

Business Economics
Management and Leadership as a major provides insights into
organizations, and management and leadership. Studies deal with
several theoretical perspectives and topics that are also essential
for practicing managers and leaders, for example, Human Resource
Management, Quality Management and Strategic Management, Teams
in Organizations, Organization Theories and Stakeholder Management.
Studies include the development of skills for teamwork, effective
communication, and co-operation, which are important for practice
as well as for successful degree studies.
Marketing
Studies of marketing cover the examination of market structures
and competition as well as marketing planning, implementation
and control. The core area of marketing consists of strategic
planning, marketing research and communication, international
and services marketing. In a broader perspective marketing also
includes the study of marketing ethics and environmental issues.
Taking all these matters into consideration marketing operates
as a tool to satisfying customer needs and creating lasting
customer relationships.
