Chapter 2: POSITION DESCRIPTION
R. DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS:
Position Title:
Director of Information Technology and Systems
Functional Description:
The Director of information Technology and
Systems is responsible for the University's voice, data and
video communications resources to support the effective and
efficient management and operation of the University and to
support the University's educational, research and service missions.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establishes and maintains the University's
computing resources and services.
- Works with user groups to assure that instructional, research,
service and administrative needs are met.
- Advises faculty and administrative officers concerning the
acquisition of computing and telecommunication equipment and
software.
- Provides technical assistance and staffing for the University's
general computing and telecommunications facilities.
- Provides non-academic instruction and assistance to users
of the University's computing and telecommunications facilities.
- Establishes, maintains and manages the University's telecommunications
facilities if the University owns and operates its own system.
If the University telecommunications system is established and
maintained by an outside contractor, the Director of Information
Technology and Systems is the principal adviser to the Central
Administration on telecommunications.
- Prepares an annual budget for the Division and supervises
expenditures and purchases.
- Is responsible for the selection, appointment and evaluation
of personnel within the Division.
Reporting Line:
The Director of Information Technology and
Systems reports to the President
Span of Control:
Reporting to the Director of Information
Technology and Systems are the following:
- Telecommunications Manager
- Unix System Administrator
- Development Manager
- Computer Lab Assistants
- Hardware Manager
Qualifications:
The Director of Information Technology and
Systems should hold a masters degree in computer science or related
studies and should have had extensive experience in the operation
of computing and telecommunications facilities serving educational,
research and management functions on a large scale. The Director
must be adept at communicating with users of varying degrees of
sophistication, as well as technical experts in the field. It
is essential that the Director be user-oriented, recognizing that
computing and telecommunications facilities and services are to
support the teaching, research, service and management functions
of the University.
The Director must have good personnel and financial management
skills and be multilingual, with competence
in Arabic, French and English.
