F. DIRECTOR OF THE LIBRARY:
Position Title:
Director of the Library
Functional Description:
The Director of the Library is responsible for all library and allied learning resources at AUI and for ensuring that such materials and services are available to students and faculty so as to advance the academic enterprise most effectively and efficiently.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Is responsible for selecting, training, organising and supervising the Library staff.
- Prepares and administers an annual budget, determines priorities and assures the accountability of all expenditures, purchases and other financial transactions.
- Works with faculty to establish priorities for library acquisition and collection development.
- Ensures that the University’s library resources are promptly and properly catalogued so as to make them readily available to students and faculty.
- Establishes, with appropriate consultation, policies and procedures for circulation of materials and the protection of books and other library materials.
- Is responsible for the management of the Library's information technology systems, electronic data banks and the University's participation in international electronic data banks.
- Participates actively in decisions regarding Library construction and expansion, facilities and services.
- Assumes a leadership role in determining the kinds of other materials and facilities needed for the instructional program.
- Is responsible for the development of acquisition and preservation policies relative to rare books, prints and documents.
- Provides leadership in the development of collections of rare Moroccan manuscripts, prints and other documents.
- Is responsible for seeking external support for the Library through such mechanisms as 'Friends of the Library' and other avenues.
Reporting Line:
Reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Span of Control:
Reporting to the Director of Library are the following:
- Library Technical Manager
- Library Assistants
Qualifications:
The Director of Library should hold a masters degree or doctorate in library sciences and have had extensive experience at subordinate levels in the management of a university library. The Director must be personally familiar with all functions of a university library and the current technology to support those functions. He or she must be thoroughly familiar with the staffing requirements for a modern university library and be able to effectively manage professional staff. The Director must be knowledgeable of professional standards for university library collections and collection development. He or she must be trilingual, with competence in Arabic, French and English.
