C. DEANS OF THE SCHOOLS:
Position Title:
Deans of the Schools
Functional Description:
The Deans of the Schools are the principal academic and administrative officers of the Schools. They are responsible for the curricula, instructional and research activities and service projects of the School. In addition, they are responsible for planning and budgeting, personnel actions, and policies and procedures to guide the work of the Schools.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- As the principal academic officer of the School, the Dean:
- working with the faculty of the School, devises, implements, maintains and evaluates undergraduate and graduate curricula appropriate to the mission of the School;
- ensures the high quality of teaching in the School;
- working with the faculty of the School, recruits and recommends for appointment the faculty members required to fuffill the mission of the School;
- encourages and supports the research and creative activities of the School's faculty;
- working with the Associate Vice President for Research and Directors of related Research Centers, assures the integration of research activities and graduate education;
- represents the faculty in their relationships with the University’s administration and other schools;
- working with the faculty and the Vice President for Academic Affairs,
recommends policies and procedures for admission of undergraduate and graduate students.
- As the principal adminitrative officer of the school, the Dean:
- presides over meetings of the faculty of the School;
- prepares and recommends the annual budget of the School;
- allocates discretionary funds within the School;
- allocates building and facility space to the particular functions of the School; and
- prepares an annual report of all activities of the School.
- As the principal academic and administrative officer of the School, the Dean ensures that university-wide academic, administrative, and financial policies, rules and regulations are implemented within the School.
Reporting Line:
The Deans of the Schools report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Span of Control:
Reporting to the Deans of the Schools are the following:
- Coordinators of Programs/Departments
Qualifications:
The Dean of a School must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a discipline represented in the School. The Dean must have extensive experience as a teacher in his or her discipline, must be qualified for appointment to the rank of professor and must have demonstrated important research or creative activity in his or her discipline. The Dean must also have the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and faculty and be an accomplished leader and administrator. He or she must be trilingual, with competence in Arabic, French and English.
