B. VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS:
Position Title:
Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Functional Description:
The Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of AUI and exercises broad leadership and administrative responsibilities over academic personnel, programs, facilities and services. Responsibilities include planning, development, evaluation, policy initiation and implementation and budgeting within the Academic Affairs Division. The Vice President for Academic Affairs represents the President in his absence, within Board policy.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides intellectual leadership for the deans, faculty and directors of the research centers.
- Working with the deans and the faculty, supervises the development, maintenance and review of appropriate undergraduate, graduate, and professional curricula of the University.
- Working with the deans and the faculty, formulates, maintains and reviews the academic personnel policies of the University, recommending their adoption to the President of the University.
- Represents to the President the concerns of the deans and the faculty.
- Working with the deans and the faculty, supervises the appointment, promotion and tenure policies of the University.
- Working with the deans and the faculty, encourages and promotes appropriate techniques and standards of teaching.
- Working with the deans and the faculty, recommends to the President the University's standards for the admission and retention of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Certifies to the President the eligibility of students to receive undergraduate and graduate degrees.
- Working with the deans and the directors of the research centers, promotes and encourages the creativity, scholarship and research of the faculty and of the professional personnel of the research centers.
- Primary responsibility to work with the dean and the faculty to encourage and support the development and maintenance of library facilities and equipment nad information technology services appropriate to the teaching, research and service activities of the University.
- Working with the deans, the faculty, the directors of the research centers, the Library and Information Technology Services, prepares and recommends to the President of the University the annual budgets for the Division of Academic Affairs.
- Working with the deans, establishes the University’s academic calendar.
- Provides leadership and has responsibility for applications for accreditation and required follow-up activities.
Reporting Line:
The Vice President for Academic Affairs reports to the President of the University.
Span of Control:
Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs are the following:
Deans of the Schools
- Director of Library
- Director of Language Center
- Director of Center of Academic Development and Study Skills
Qualifications:
The Vice President for Academic Affairs must hold a Ph.D.*, or equivalent terminal degree and be qualified for a full professorship in his or her academic discipline. He or she must demonstrate a distinguished record of teaching and research or creative activity and possess a broad understanding of the principles and practices of higher education world-wide. A talent for leadership is essential, as is an ability to communicate with all constituencies of the University. Also important is successful experience in academic administration and an understanding of academic planning and budgeting.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs must by education and prior experience demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the mission of AUI.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs must be trilingual, with competence in Arabic, French and English.
