Using Demand Side Management to Adapt to Water Scarcity and Climate Change in the Saiss Basin

The research project entitled “Using Demand Side Management to Adapt to Water Scarcity and Climate Change in the Saiss Basin” was approved for funding jointly by Canada’s International Development and Research Center (IDRC) and UK Department for International Development (DfID). The multidisciplinary research group, which is led by Dr. Ahmed Legrouri, is composed of faculty from the School of Science and Engineering and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Al Akhawayn University. The “Agence du Bassin Hydraulique du Sebou”, led by its Director, has been working with the AUI team during all phases, including proposal preparation and implementation.

The Saiss Sub-Basin of the Sebou Basin in Northern Morocco is experiencing unsustainable levels of water overexploitation, due both to long-term decreases in precipitation and increases in water demand. Surface waters are greatly reduced, and at current exploitation rates of the aquifer will be completely depleted within 25 years.

As a mean of reducing water use within the area and thereby contributing to aquifer sustainability, this project will examine whether Demand Side Management (DSM) can provide a solid basis for integrated water management and strengthened capacity for adaptation to climate change in the Saiss basin. This project will work with multiple stakeholders and focus on the benefits for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities within project sites. Since agriculture accounts for 92 percent of Morocco’s water consumption, it will be the focus of this effort; in the Saiss basin, which is the focus of this study, over 80 percent of the water is used for agriculture. It will be the focal area of the DSM strategy.

The inexpensive production of sugars from lignocellulose is an essential step for the use of biomass to produce fuel ethanol. Olive cake is an abundant by-product of the olive oil industry and represents a potentially significant lignocellulosic source for bioethanol production in the Mediterranean basin. Furthermore, converting olive cake to ethanol could add further value to olive production. In the present study, olive cake was evaluated as a feedstock for ethanol production. To this end, the lignocellulosic component of the olive cake was dilute-acid pretreated at a 13.5% olive-cake loading with 1.75% (w/v) sulfuric acid and heating at 160¡É for 10 min. This was followed by chemical elimination of fermentation inhibitors. Soluble sugars resulting from the pretreatment process were fermented using E. coli FBR5, a strain engineered to selectively produce ethanol. 8.1 g of ethanol/L was obtained from hydrolysates containing 18.1 g of soluble sugars. Increasing the pretreatment temperature to 180¡É resulted in failed fermentations, presumably due to inhibitory by-products released during pretreatment.

Application of NASA Assets to Public Health

Abstract:
NASA’s research budget directed toward understanding the Earth is by far the largest such effort in the world. Alone and in collaboration with many countries around the globe, NASA holds the premiere data sets that map the changing environment, which all humans live within. NASA also creates and sponsors the major models based on these data. NASA is also required to apply knowledge gained to answer scientific questions to the benefit of society. While, almost all of the data and model products are freely available, their use requires a high degree of expertise. NASA funds work in many areas to bridge the gap between potential users of these data and products. One such area is public health. Current and recent work at Marshall Space Flight Center includes such diverse applications of examining excess deaths from stroke in the south eastern United States, demonstrating an ability to link individual health records to air quality data derived from surface monitors and satellite data, and evaluation of pollen and asthma in the southwestern US. Developing efforts include working in Israel, Sri Lanka, and hopefully India, Pakistan, and Jordan. Other efforts at other NASA centers have looked a disease vector modeling for such conditions as malaria. Major technical problems addressed include scientifically defensible integrations of surface and satellite systems, which operate on radically different physical principles, different spatial scales and at different temporal intervals. Legal problems addressed include the protection of individual patient privacy while linking private data with the environmental data. This was a special emphasis of the Environmental Public Health Tracking Network demonstration project, HELIX-Atlanta.
