Mission Statement
Academic Research
- Promote the use of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (GIS/RS) technologies in academic research
- Establish a Geographic Information System database
- Reinforce the standardization of Geo-spatial data in Morocco
- Contribute to environmental monitoring research (mainly land use land cover change)
Continuing Education
- Ensure continuing training for decision-makers in Morocco who works in different field (development, agriculture, forestry, etc.)
- Ensure advanced training in GIS and RS for researchers and decision-makers (Executive Directors of public institutions, faculty of Moroccan universities etc.)
Technology Transfer
- Promote technology transfer of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing in Morocco
- Implement Geographic Information System technology in municipalities and other public institutions
- Distribute digital geographical data through the web
Consulting
- Respond to the need of private corporations for digital data
- Consult in spatial data building processes
- Create scenarios for development for decision-makers
Academic Programs
- Develop an academic program for Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane
- Stimulate job opportunities for AUI students at the national and international level in the fields of development, urban and regional planing, resource and environmental management, geographic information systems and remote sensing
Collaboration
- Work closely with Royal Center for Remote Sensing (CRTS) in Rabat
- Work with international organizations and NGOs through collaboration and exchange of expertise (FAO, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO etc.)
- Participate in national and regional conferences and activities related to digital image processing, and Geographic Information Systems
- Establish a research network with universities and centers in Morocco
- Represent Clark University (Clark labs) at the national level in Morocco
- Establish a close relationship with researchers at Clark labs and other universities in United States such as Maryland University
- Distribute Idrisi and Cartalix softwares (the Center is declared an Idrisi Research Center)
Potential Projects
- Develop a global GIS data base on health and urban environments in collaboration with the University of Arizona
- Help the Administration du Génie Rural (AGR) to establish maps for temporal and spatial land cover and land use change
- Help the Gharb Irrigation Bureau (ORMVA-Gharb) to identify best practices
- Monitor change in land use and vegetation cover in the Meknès-Tafilalt region
- Conduct research on urban sprawl in collaboration with the National Urban Planning Agency
- Participate in regional planning in the Ifrane-Middle Atlas region
