Human and mediated communication is now recognized to be one of the fastest growing fields requiring expertise applicable to business, politics, information, and entertainment. There is a growing need for professionals trained in a wide variety of specialty areas. Thus a communication degree is highly valuable for employment in business/management, international affairs, development, media industries, human/public relations, computation and even increasingly in scientific fields. The Communication Studies Program offers students an exciting opportunity to develop a variety of practical and theoretical skills while interacting with a wide range of students and professors.

Career Opportunities

The degree in communication prepares students for a wide range of careers. Opportunities exist in communication and information departments of ministries and private companies, advertising and marketing agencies, media institutions and international organizations.

Who is this program for?

The Communications Studies Program is designed for students with a baccalaureate degree or equivalent who are interested in:

  • pursuing a career in the communication/media industries,
  • gaining a broad range of knowledge and skills in communication,
  • progressing to Master's and Doctoral studies in areas related to Communication/Media studies.

Program Description

The Communication Studies Program offers students knowledge in professional and applied communications, both local and international in scope. Students will gain theoretical, technical and applied expertise in fields such as Public Relations, Advertising, International Communication, Writing and Visual Production, and Mass Media Research. The Communication Studies program takes four years to complete and consists of the various components listed below, each designed to give students specific skills and essential knowledge while providing them with a wide choice of courses:
University Core Courses in the fields of humanities, natural and social sciences. They provide students with a solid Liberal Arts Education and enable them improve theoretical and communication skills in English, Arabic and French.

  • School Core Courses teach students analytical skills, critical thinking and research methodology.
  • Communication courses introduce students to the fields of Communication including human, mass, and international communication, as well as video and print production, public relations, and promotional communication. The courses focus on developing core competencies needed in the job market.
  • Concentration courses allow students to specialize either in Media Studies or Professional Communication.
  • Minor courses in Business Administration, International Studies, Women and Development, Human Resource Development, or Computer Science complement the major courses.
  • Elective courses can be selected from any other program offered at AUI. The BAIS program culminates with an internship in the workplace and a capstone project
