Tutoring Services
FAQs (Adapted from R. Mittan)
Can anyone be a tutor?
No. Tutoring is neither as easy nor as difficult as it appears to those who have not done it. Effective tutors are not necessarily “experts” or even A students. Instead, they are successful students who know how to help others achieve their own success. Effective tutors must have extremely good communication skills—especially as listeners. And they must be patient. The following is a list of criteria needed in a tutor:
| Student standing |
- Second semester or beyond
- Good GPA
- Ethical study behavior (no reports of cheating or any misbehavior)
|
| Course completion |
- Good grades in the course being tutored
- Teacher recommendation for the course being tutored
|
| Conscientiousness |
- Sense of commitment and fulfillment from working with other students
|
| Ability |
- Competence in the course being tutored
- No other part-time job
- Time-keeping
- Maintaining effective class atmosphere
- Recognizing the weaknesses or needs of tutees
- Self-regulation in doing make-up or extra sessions
|
| Communication |
- Strong communication skills with peers and course instructors
- Diligent use of email in keeping tutees up to date

How do I become a tutor?
If you believe that you could become a tutor for one or more courses, simply fill out the application form and ask one or more of your instructors to fill out the recommendation portion of the form. (If the instructor who taught the course you wish to tutor is no longer at AUI, you may be able to get a recommendation from another instructor in that field who knows you as a student.) Return the completed form to the Tutoring Services office, along with a schedule of days/times that you are available to tutor.
Does tutoring take a lot of time?
It depends. For some tutors and some courses, very little preparation is needed for each tutoring session. So, the time needed is only for the sessions and a few minutes’ meeting with the instructor every two weeks or so. For other tutors, it’s necessary to spend more time preparing, reviewing a textbook, working through sample problems, or getting detailed advice from the instructor.
Do students pay for tutoring and do tutors get paid?
At this time, CAD Tutoring Services is still able to offer tutoring at no cost to students. We are always aware that we may need to charge a fee in the future.
Yes, tutors get paid! Currently, the rate of pay is 30Dhs per hour. Tutors are paid for their actual tutoring time, as well as for training meetings and meetings with instructors. (However, no one tutors specifically because of the money!)
In what courses is tutoring available?
This depends on the semester, the availability of tutors, the interest and need of students, and the budget. Students and professors usually need the first two weeks for assessment; therefore we are still in the process of building a comprehensive list of courses needed for tutoring. Previously, the services offered the following courses in these formats:

How are the tutoring groups formed?
In general, the day and time for tutoring sessions is determined by the tutor’s availability—and, in some cases, the availability of the tutoring location. Once session times are established, students who want to participate must come to the Tutoring Services office to sign up for a particular tutoring group, which they will attend throughout the semester. This ensures that small groups stay small and medium groups do not become too big!
Drop-in tutoring sessions are announced to all students enrolled in a course. They can then choose to attend at any time that the service is offered.
Why haven’t I heard of CAD Tutoring Services?
During Fall 2003, Tutoring Services was a pilot project, funded by a research grant. As such, participation was limited to a small number of students in only a few courses. During Spring 2004, Tutoring Services received permission to become a fully implemented program. However, it was still small and didn’t advertise its services beyond courses for which tutoring was offered.
In the future, expect to hear a lot more about Tutoring Services. And, please help us spread the word by telling your friends and peers about it!
