Spring 2004
Best Practices in Student Evaluation
In the Board Room of Building 1, on Tuesday 23 March, 34 professors
of various schools and centers attended the first session on teaching
effectiveness for Spring 2004. Four presenters, Lynne Dahmen (SHSS),
Andrew Canterbury (SBA), Chakib Alaoui (SSE), and Samira El Atia (CAD)
related experiences of evaluating student work, using both projects
and tests. The brief discussion following each presenter brought several
ideas to the table:
- the composition of groups in projects
- team dynamics
- goal of mimicking the workplace
- students’ abilities to evaluate their peers
- related questions about grading
Evaluations collected from participants at the end of the session reported
that the session was informative and that many had come to hear what
their colleagues were doing in student assessment. Those who were interested
in further developing their testing expertise had several suggestions
for discussion:
- the link between ILO's and test item construction
- how to write reliable and valid tests
- how to learn from tests for the improvement of teaching
- to get testing resources online instead of having workshops
This last suggestion is already in place. Please refer to Workshops
2002 and scroll down to "Other useful Links". It was also
suggested that we bring in external experts in addition to our institutional
expertise, to enrich the discussion.
