Reading and Writing - How to Improve Students' Reading and Writing
Skills - Encouraging Students Analytical Skills
WEDNESDAY,April 10, 2002
Clearly, student writing ability remains a recognizable problem at AUI,
as well as reluctance to read long chapters of academic discourse. This
workshop will discuss strategies which could be used to improve the
quality of writing among AUI students, who are no longer supported by
the writing courses offered in the LC and core curriculum. Professors
teaching specialized courses rarely have time to focus on the technicalities
of student writing problems, yet expect a high standard of written assignment.
Ways to address this problem will be discussed. Experiences with student
reading loads will also be discussed, with a view to establishing what
is currently an achievable optimum, bearing in mind language limitations
of our students as they struggle to achieve proficiency in what is for
most a third language.
The second part of this workshop will review ways to encourage and
develop critical thinking strategies and analytical skills among students
