Water, Women, and Decision Power
Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane and the National Office of Potable Water (ONEP)organize the Ceremony of the launching at AUI of the UNESCO Chair on “Water, Women, and Decision Power” on Wednesday 5 April 2006.
The Ceremony which will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium of building four will be presided over by President Rachid Benmokhtar and Mr. Ali Fassi Fihri, Director General of ONEP in the presence of UNESCO representatives, government officials, representatives of the civil society and the local authorities.
Dr Asma El Kasmi was selected to be in charge of the Chair created in January 2006, in the framework of the international program UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs that encourage academic mobility, rapid transfer of knowledge, and inter-academic cooperation as the main tools for the promotion of progress in UNESCO’s fields of competence.
The main objective of the Chair is to provide training for women and girls in rural areas in Morocco in the sustainable use of water resources. The training program lies within the scope of the strategic axes ONEP regarding the generalization of the access to drinking water and the intervention in the cleansing of the rural zones.
The Chair work will contribute to the fight against poverty, the protection of the environment, the training of women and young girls and to the achievement of the Millennium Objectives in general.
The Chair would facilitate collaboration between researchers and professors from Al Akhawayn University, decision makers and trainers from the ONEP and members from the international network of UNESCO chairs “Women, Science, Technology, and Water”.
