Moroccan Colonial History: An interdisciplinary Approach
As part of its annual Moroccan History Days, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane is pleased to announce the organization of a series of talks with the general theme: Moroccan Colonial History: An Interdisciplinary Approach. The main objective of the talks is to bring the discipline of history to the forefront of public interest and debate, especially among young Moroccans. Moroccan History days are also intended to bring scholars from across campuses and disciplines to present their on-going research about Moroccan history. This year the theme of the Moroccan History Days is on Morocco’s colonial past. The presenters will tackle the complex realities of the colonial encounter from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including politics, social and economic history and cultural studies.
The colonial period remains a very important bracket of history which has shaped Morocco in a number of different ways. We hope that these series of talks will help shed more light on the legacies of colonialism in Morocco and how Moroccans from different social backgrounds and regions were affected by the forces of French colonialism. We will invite a small number of scholars who made major contributions in the field of colonial history in Morocco to discuss the following themes:
- Colonialism and Nationalism
- Colonialism and Culture
- Colonial Economy
- Colonialism and Literature
- Colonialism and Cinema.
In addition to the talks and discussions, Moroccan History Days will feature a number of films and documentaries including Saadia, Les Hommes Nouveaux, Le Cinema Colonial, Echec à la Misère, and Another Sky. During these events the library will hold a book exhibition between November 27 and December 1.
