Al Akhawayn University’s current actions follow the orientations of a 5 year strategic plan (2010-2014) with seven priorities that aim to reinforce the American education system, grounded in the liberal arts, and to produce graduates ready to play leading roles in an increasingly globalized Moroccan and world economy. The strategic plan emphasizes human capital development and internationalization and the need to continuously improve the quality of the University’s program, students, faculty, governance, and more. The plan also readies Al Akhawayn University to gain international accreditation, validating its programs and processes in a transparent fashion to recognize and reward excellence, and produce graduates able to enhance Morocco and engage the world.

Completely modern and networked, the University is coeducational, residential, and primarily undergraduate, but has rapidly developing graduate programs. The outlook is international, and tolerance is promoted and expected of students, staff, and faculty members belonging to over 25 nationalities all living and working together.

Faculty is composed of 125 full-time and 10 part-time exceptionally qualified professionals, most of them hold doctoral degrees. Sixty percent of faculty members are Moroccan, a number of whom have dual citizenship, and the other 40% represent over 12 different nationalities.

Over the last 10 years, there has been a consistently balanced student population of fifty percent female and fifty percent male. There are over 160 students of 25 different nationalities on campus, in study abroad and exchange programs during the regular semester, or attending the intensive Arabic and North African Studies summer programs.

AUI operates two 16-week semesters that run late August to mid-December, and mid- January to mid-May. There is currently one 7-week summer session that is from early June to late July. Summer is the busiest time for conferences, visitors, and special groups.
