Relocation Frequently Asked Questions
Cars
Q: How long does it take, after arrival, for faculty to buy a car?
A: This depends on the person. You can do it in a week if you are determined and willing to do a bit of running around.
Q: Can one ship a car to Morocco without paying duty?
A: Yes, but it may not be worth it. Depends on the shipping costs. People have done it.
Q: If I am going to ship or drive a car in, what documents are needed to clear Moroccan Customs?
A: The original title of ownership for the car, not a photocopy.
Q: Is it even advisable to ship a car to Morocco?
A: It is more reasonable for a European to drive a car here, because of cost. But if you have a good car and can find cheap shipping, it may be worth it.
Q: What is the gasoline type? Leaded or unleaded?
A: Both, with diesel available too.
Q: Can one bring an "American" car there?
A: Yes, but your concerns will be spare parts, the kind of car, its gas consumption and the price of gas (currently 7.30 dhs/litre).
Q: How long does the car buying process take generally after arrival?
A: You can buy a new car fairly immediately. Lots of cars trade hands early in the new term. Bring cash if you plan to buy a car soon after arrival. US dollars will be preferred by those leaving.
Q: What is the general cost for a tax-free car, sedan vs. 4WD. We are looking for something like a Honda Accord or a 4WD such as a Jeep Cherokee.
A: New car prices are similar to the US. Second hand prices are higher than in many countries. Some real examples: a Mercedes C220, all options, perfect condition, five years old: 17,000 USD; a Honda CR-V, most options, perfect condition, three years old: 11,000 USD
Q: Are mechanics easy to find and reasonable in cost?
A: Easy to find, fairly cheap, often not very good. At a branded service center, you get very good service, but these are not in Ifrane.
Q: Is it difficult to find a good quality second-hand car in Morocco?
A: It isn’t. At the end of every semester, there are usually ex-pats leaving with good cars to sell.
Q: What car dealerships are available locally?
A: Fiat, Renault, Peugeot, Mercedes, Honda, Nissan, Toyota: essentially most European and Japanese; “local” means Meknes, Fes, or Rabat
