Academic Writing (AWT)
AWT 1001 Academic Writing 0 (4-1)
Placement based on TOEFL subscores and /
or placement tests.
The purpose of Academic Writing 1001 is to enhance students’ basic
English writing skills, laying the foundations for more advanced
writing classes. The course focuses on sentence patterns, paying
close attention to accuracy of grammar, punctuation, capitalization,
and spelling. It is taught in close coordination with grammar
classes, so that writing activities will reinforce the grammar
being learned. Approximately 75% of the course will be devoted
to basic sentence patterns and 25% will be devoted to the basic
paragraph.

Academic Writing 1002 aims at further enhancing
students’ basic English writing skills,
preparing them to meet the writing demands
of a college education. The course objective
is to help students master paragraph writing
and further master the four basic sentence
patterns of English. AWT 1002 will focus
on the structure of a paragraph, paying close
attention to accuracy of grammar, punctuation,
capitalization, and spelling. As AWT 1002
is a transition to composition courses, students
will work within the writing process and
will use basic rhetorical patterns. Approximately
80% of the course will be devoted to paragraph
writing and 20% of the course will introduce
the essay.
