Conference Rationale

This conference is organized by Al-Akhawayn University Arabic Studies Program and Middlebury College Arabic Summer School.

Despite the slight decrease in students’ enrollment in domestic Arabic programs due to instability in some Arab countries, many students still study Arabic in the United States as well as in Arab universities and academic institutions in the Middle East. While there has been a long history of collaboration, educators in the field of Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) have found some considerable differences in the structures, goals, and teaching methodologies between the domestic programs and those abroad. In an effort to bridge this gap, the Arabic Studies Program at Al-Khawayn University and the Middlebury College Arabic Summer School are organizing a conference that is devoted to understanding the differences, to diagnosing any associated problems and to providing possible solutions. The conference opening address will shed light on the current challenges encountering TAFL and emphasize the need for preparing Arabic learners to better function in an increasing globalized world. The workshops and panels will provide a platform for researchers and Arabic language teachers to find creative and innovative ways to improve the Arabic language curriculum. A variety of topics ranging from the teaching of Arabic language skills to the integration of instructional technology into the Arabic classroom will be presented and discussed. The conference will also address pressing pedagogical needs such as the design of effective assessment tools and the use of the vernacular in teaching Arabic to non-native speakers.

 أهداف المؤتمر

على الرغم من الانخفاض الطفيف في أعداد الطلاب الملتحقين ببرامج تدريس اللغة العربية والتي تأثرت بعدم الاستقرار في بعض البلدان العربية، ما زال الكثير من هؤلاء الطلاب يدرسون اللغة العربية في الجامعات والمعاهد الأمريكية وكذلك في الجامعات العربية والمؤسسات الأكاديمية في الشرق الأوسط. وقد وجد الأكاديميون العاملون في مجال تعليم اللغة العربية كلغة أجنبية (TAFL) بعض الاختلافات الجوهرية في الهياكل، والأهداف، ومنهجيات التدريس بين البرامج المحلية ومثيلاتها في الخارج رغم التاريخ الطويل من التعاون بينها. وفي محاولة لسد هذه الفجوة، قام برنامج الدراسات العربية في جامعة الأخوين بالتعاون مع المدرسة العربية  بكلية  مدلبري بتنظيم مؤتمر يخصص في عامه الأول لفهم هذه الاختلافات وتشخيص أية مشاكل مرتبطة بها وتوفير الحلول الممكنة لها.

وسوف يلقي الخطاب الافتتاحي للمؤتمر الضوء على التحديات الراهنة التي تواجه مجال تدريس اللغة العربية كلغة أجنبية والتأكيد على حاجة المجال إلى إعداد دارسي اللغة العربية للعمل والتأقلم في عالم تزداد فيه العولمة يوماً بعد يوم. كما توفر الندوات وورش العمل منبراً للباحثين ومعلمي اللغة العربية لإيجاد طرق خلاقة ومبتكرة لتطوير مناهج اللغة العربية وتحسينها. وسيتم من خلال هذه الجلسات تقديم مجموعة متنوعة من المواضيع تتراوح ما بين تدريس مهارات اللغة وإدماج التكنولوجيا في عملية التدريس داخل صفوف اللغة العربية. وسيتناول المؤتمر أيضا الاحتياجات التربوية الملحة كإعداد وسائل تقييم فعالة وتدريب للمعلمين على إدماج  اللغة الدارجة في برامج تدريس اللغة العربية للناطقين بغيرها .
