American Society for Engineering Management: First Student Chapter in Africa at Al Akhawayn

The Kick-off meeting of Al Akhawayn Chapter of the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) took place on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane.

David Wyrick, Dean of Al Akhawayn's School of Science and Engineering (SSE) and former President of ASEM, served as Guest Speaker for the Kick-off meeting.

Wyrick presented some of the guiding principles of ASEM:

- Vision... ASEM speaks for the engineering management profession

- Mission... ASEM provides engineering management solutions to leadership and management challenges in order to create and lead great technical organizations. It promotes the development and practice of the engineering management profession

"It is important to be members of the professional societies that promote your own field," said Wyrick. "The American Society for Engineering Management is the international society that represents the engineering management profession. We have recently received the approval from the ASEM Board of Directors to form the first student chapter in Africa, at Al Akhawayn University."

Dean Wyrick shared with the students ASEM's strategic items and achievements accomplished over the year 2011-2012, during which he was serving as ASEM President.

Students' questions during the discussion session enabled Dean Wyrick to further elaborate on some of the concrete benefits arising from becoming ASEM member, namely, professional growth opportunities, networking, publications, and international certification to validate an engineering manager's skills and competencies.

The adviser of ASEM-AUI Chapter, Ilham Kissani, Assistant Professor of Management Science at SSE, highlighted the openness of the chapter to all engineers and technical professionals regardless of their specialization. "Whether you are going into Engineering Management or not, this organization will give you insight and contacts for the rest of your working career," explained Kissani.

ASEM-AUI Chapter elected new officers who displayed enthusiasm to organize events serving the interests of Al Akhawayn Engineering students.

Membership applications are available in the SSE Dean's Office in Building 5.  With the application and 300DH dues, students can join the first ASEM student
