AUI Mourns the Loss of Dr. Bachir Raissouni

The AUI community received tragic news of the recent passing of Dr. Bachir Raissouni, the University’s first Dean of the School of Science and Engineering. Dr. Raissouni, an environmental enthusiast, obtained doctorates in Physical Chemistry from the University of Dijon and in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry from New Mexico State University. Upon joining the faculty at AUI, Dr. Raissouni taught Analytical and Environmental Chemistry and led SSE as its first Dean. Dr. Raissouni continued to pursue his research interests in environmental studies throughout his life. He was the Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Issues and Regional Development (CEIRD) at Al Akhawayn University. His work emphasized environmental protection and restoration, and he designed and implemented several monitoring programs for pollutants in water, soil, and plants.

Dr. Raissouni was the Chairman of the first International Conference of Biodiversity and Renewable Natural Resource Preservation in 1999, and he was an active member of the International Energy Foundation (IEF) and the International Advisory Committee (IAC). Throughout his professional life, Dr. Raissouni was involved in environmental awareness programs concentrated on improving energy efficiency and utilizing clean energy sources. He was an inspiration to students, faculty, and staff alike at the University and paved the way for the future of the SSE. Dr. Raissouni will surely be missed.
