Al Akhawayn men's soccer team-essec

The Al Akhawayn men's soccer team, the Lions, reached the final in the ESSEC International Sport Tournament (Le Tournoi des 5 Ballons) in Paris from April 17-22. The Lions played in a very tight final match against the Belgrade University School of Law, Serbia, which ended in Belgrade's favor in penalty kicks. Earlier in the tournament, Al Akhawayn had competed against Lebanese American University (2-0), Serbia University (0-1), ESSEC (France) (3-0), and Arrhus (Denmark) (3-0)

Ali Elouafiq-Haitam Rifi-Hazim Azghari

Al Akhawayn students were awarded third prize in the 1st National Ethical Hacking competition on April 15, 2011 at ENSIAS. The Al Akhawayn team ("White Tarbouch") composed of students Ali Elouafiq (Class of 2012), Haitam Rifi(Class of 2012), and Hazim Azghari (Class of 2015) competed against nine other schools in the "Moroccan Cyber Security Challenge." The teams were challenged at different levels including exploit development, privilege escalation, steganography, cryptanalysis, network attacks, software cracking, reverse engineering, forensics,and web applications exploitation. The first place prize was awarded to ENSIAS and second place to FST Tanger

Hafid Mekaoui and Mohammed Errihani

Al Akhawayn University Language Center instructor Hafid Mekaoui and Mohammed Errihani, former LC instructor and currently at Purdue University Calumet, gave a presentation at the March 2011 TESOL convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The presentation, entitled Peer-mentoring: Incorporating Native Speaking Students in the English Language Classroom, describes how two university-based intensive English programs (IEPs), one in the United States and the other in Morocco, have implemented and maintained two different approaches to help connect their students with other native speaking students on their campuses with similar results. These programs provide an exceptional experiential learning opportunity by helping both English language learners and their peers learn from each other through daily interaction and exchange of information across cultural, political, and religious boundaries in an environment that fosters mutual respect and understanding.

Rotaract Club

The Rotaract Club at Al Akhawayn University has been awarded the prize for Best Action for Public Interest during the Rotaract MENA District Conference in Tunisia, held from March 24- 27, 2011. Twelve students from Al Akhawayn attended the event, along with participants from other countries including Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Mauritania. The conference is organized annually in a MENA region country.

Ahmed Legrouri

Ahmed Legrouri, Dean of the Al Akhawayn University School of Science and Engineering, has been named a member of the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC). Among the GEDC’s upcoming events are its second conference at Peking University in Beijing, China, from October 20-23, 2011, and the ASEE Global Colloquium, to be held in Shanghai from October 24-27, 2011.
