SHSS Human and Economic Development Research Unit


The Human and Economic Development Research Unit (HEDRU)of the Social Science Research Instituteis a multi-disciplinary group of scholars, both from Al Akhawayn University and from other institutions, who share an interest in human and development studies in Morocco. This group is composed of geographers, GIS and remote sensing specialists, sociologists, foresters, environmentalists and anthropologists among others, who are committed to collaborations across disciplines to understand diverse social phenomena.


Scholars at HEDRU generally favor applied research from a multi-disciplinary approach. Their interest covers a range of social sciences disciplines and can include:

- Land use land cover change

- Urban space planning

- Rural sociology

- Forest and forestry

- Remote sensing and GIS application

- Quantitative analysis and modeling
