Al Akhawayn Student Athlete Thrives in National Swimming Championship
Ifrane, February 9, 2012 – With an impressive track record in national and international swimming competitions, Al Akhawayn student-athlete Amine Kouame (‘13) has set four national records in Morocco's Winter Swimming Championship that took place February 2-5, 2012 in Meknes.
In this latest challenge, engineering graduate student Kouame capped the Championship by breaking the records in the 100-meter medley, the 50-meter backstroke, the 100-meter backstroke, and the 100-meter free style.
“My approach is that athletes should be perseverant and, above all, self-confident," he said. Kouame had been training since the age of 7 before he enrolled in Al Akhawayn in 2011, where he joined the official Al Akhawayn swimming team. He also worked on campus as a part-time coach for the swimming team and the children members of the Al Akhawayn Swimming School.
"Al Akhawayn sport teams have some outstanding athletes who have always made us proud in Morocco and overseas," said Adel Kamane, Al Akhawayn Director of Athletics. “Striving for victory is the nature of any athletic competition, but it is only one aspect of a season’s success," he went on. "While we provide our students with an environment where they can reach their utmost potential; we always stress the value of good sportsmanship, which includes modesty in victory and acceptance of defeat."
Al Akhawayn University offers its students a diversity of sport programs, which is one of the major components of its approach to a complete and coherent education. Most student-athletes at Al Akhawayn are not only recognized for their athletic achievements, but also for their academic accomplishments. The liberal arts curriculum - combined with sports, extra-curricular activities, and community service - lays a strong foundation for success in life.
"The education system at Al Akhawayn University as well as the facilities we have on campus have successfully helped me balance sports and studies," said Kouame. "My passion for swimming has intensified with all the help I get at the University Athletics Center, as well as the opportunities I have to train with professional athletes such as the French swimming team which was in residence at Al Akhawayn recently.”
Recently, at the end of 2011, three Al Akhawayn student-athletes participated in the Pan Arab Games in Doha, Qatar, and won gold and bronze medals. Amine Kouame was one of the three.
