First Asteroid being discovered by Hassan Bourhrous

"K07T15X" is the name of the first asteroid being discovered by Hassan Bourhrous, SSE student and member of the AUI astronomy club (please see attached email).

This year, AUI astronomy club members are participating in the International Asteroid Search Campaign (IASC 2007). IASC is an educational service provided upon invitation to qualified teachers and students, offered by the Astronomical Research Institute, Hardin-Simmons University (Abilene, TX), Hands-On Universe (Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley), and Astrometrica (H. Raab, Austria).

ISAC features a 30-day asteroid campaign October-November 2007. In between the 30 days from full moon to full moon, the Astronomical Research Institute (Charleston, IL) takes images along the ecliptic using a 0.81-m prime focus telescope. Via the Internet, these images are made available to students the following morning. Using the software Astrometrica, students search these images for any unknown asteroids typically located 2-4 AU* from the Sun in the Main Belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Any of the students who make discoveries are officially recognized by the Minor Planet Center (MPC, Harvard) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The discoveries were part of an asteroid search campaign the university is participating at. The telescope mentioned below takes 3 images of the same patch of the asteroid belt with some time difference. Since the star background is almost immobile, the faster moving asteroids can be detected. Using the features of the Astrometrica software, the moving pixels are detected automatically manually when the moving object is very faint. the task now is to determine that a moving pixel is not just a hot pixel or a saturated star. Hence, its signature is compared to that of an actually asteroid. A report is sent to the Minor Planet Center (MPC) at Harvard for confirmation.

This is an extract, about the asteroid search campaign, taken from the invitation email we got:

"In between the 30 days from full moon to full moon, the Astronomical Research Institute (Charleston, IL) takes images along the ecliptic using a 0.81-m prime focus telescope. Via the Internet, these images are made available to your students the following morning. Using the software Astrometrica, your students search these images for any unknown asteroids typically located 2-4 AU from the Sun in the Main Belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter."

Congratulations to Hassan Bourhrous and to the AUI astronomy club for this first discovery of its kind in Morocco.
