AUI establishes a Donation Fund dedicated to finance measures aimed at preventing the spread of the Coronavirus
It's now been 10 days since we decided to take action with respect to the evolving Covid-19 virus situation.
During this time, I have been as proud as one can be to be part of the AUI community, whose members have acted with excellence and generosity every day. Our staff members have done it when they have - under very special conditions - physically welcomed back our faculty and students from Spring Break, and when they have been providing precious support to move courses online. Our faculty members have done it when they have been adapting their courses when they have been dispensing the courses when they have been supporting our students outside of class time when they have been adapting to voluntary work from home to minimize contamination, and as they have been adapting to the sanitary curfew since this weekend. And our students have done it by adjusting to all these enormous changes, totally altering the way they've taken classes all their lives, and showing up in record numbers to their online courses.
Every day, you have made us proud to be AUIers! Thank you!
I am writing to you today as I realize with you the significance of the (fast) upcoming challenges and uncertainties for Morocco and the rest of the world, as they relate to the Coronavirus situation. As we read the news, reflect, and/or look around us in Ifrane, we can imagine that numerous Moroccans are losing their jobs, and for the many who earn living day-to-day, the current sanitary confinement means the end of all sources of income! A number of AUIers have spontaneously conveyed to me how this situation is triggering in them some fundamental AUIer values: our value of Identity, our Liberal Arts values as lifelong students for becoming better humans, active citizens and participants in the development of our societies, and the values in our founding DNA - and constantly reinforced by His Majesty - for AUI to bring a precious contribution to Morocco and to its region. The AUIers who've approached me have all suggested that we move to action now.
We have, therefore, decided to establish a Donation Fund dedicated to finance measures aimed at preventing the spread of the Coronavirus and at mitigating its economic effects. This civic action modestly responds to the Royal initiative setting up a "Special Fund for the Management of the COVID-19 Pandemic."
The total funds you raise or contribute to our Donation Fund (all donations being purely voluntary) will be given on your behalf to the national Special Fund. In addition, AUI will match the total of your contributions and will dedicate this additional amount to the local relief efforts for families in Ifrane, Azrou, and the region. These relief efforts will be coordinated with local authorities and our colleagues and students who've been working on community service, to identify persons and families most affected during this time. Beneficiaries may include taxi drivers, waiters, housemaids, restaurant staff, hammam personnel, and individuals selling homemade goods such as bread and cookies.
As a community, we aim to raise 1.5 million dirhams, which will then be matched by AUI. Further, some colleagues have already committed personal contributions and have insisted on their remaining discreet. Their donations will be added to the amount raised, for transfer to the national Special Fund.
Your small or large gift can make a difference in the lives of those who will be suffering most from the consequences of this pandemic. Hoping each of us will make our mark on these lives right now by completing the Al Akhawayn Donation Fund Form.
