AUI Mechatronics Team Wins Robotics Competition
AUI is proud to support the AUI Mechatronics Team as they prepare to compete in the national VEX-U Competition organized by OCP Club Maker. The team recently won first place in a friendly VEX-U tournament as a result of their dedication and innovation. Their next challenge is the national VEX-U Competition in Rabat on March 1, where the top two competitors will advance to an international competition.
On February 15, the team competed in a friendly tournament to test their robots against three teams of Moroccan competitors – M6P from Benguerir, 1337 from Khouribga, and FST-Fes. The team worked daily from January 31 up until the competition to finalize their project design, moving between various design concepts and implementations. The initial tournament games resulted in ties and losses, but as the competition continued the team adapted their design to meet these challenges. Their design allowed for fast changes and they were the only team whose autonomous phase worked, allowing them to ultimately win the tournament.
The team’s captain – Farouk Lemyesser – highlights the importance of having a mechatronics team at AUI. He states, “Having a team dedicated to participating in competitions similar to the one we had is very important to the university as it helps students apply their skills in a fun productive way, as well as getting a taste of what working in engineering position will be like – especially in ultra-competitive fields where paying attention to small details might mean the difference between having a great product/deal or not.”
The team was founded in the spring of 2017 and is composed of 24 members from AUI who specialize in hardware or software. The team is grateful for each of their mentors – Dr. Kevin Smith, Dr. Rachid Lghoul, and Dr. Rachidi – along with Mrs. Bouchra Saad for her commitment to team logistics and coordination.
