AUI DARNASOL Team Awarded 2nd Place in the “Market Appeal” Category at the Solar Decathalon Africa
The DarnaSol team is representing Al Akhawayn as it paves the way for a sustainable future in Morocco and Africa as a whole. The team’s innovative home design was awarded second place in the “Market Appeal” category at the Solar Decathalon Africa – an international, collegiate competition for green buildings. The DarnaSol model encompasses a holistic lifestyle system, based around specific environments, target occupants, and sustainable goals. AUI is proud to support the DarnaSol team through the use of university solar technology testing facilities, including solar water heating systems and solar radiation measuring stations.
The team’s eco-friendly lifestyle model aims to promote the education, health, and construction sectors in Africa. In addition, its home design is intended to enhance inhabitants’ living conditions in an eco-friendly way by combining comfort, aesthetics, and functionality in one space. The resulting model is particularly tailored for professionals working in rural areas and arid regions in Africa. The DarnaSol house is divided into blocks to embrace multi-functionality and optimize structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing potential. This block design will also help in the transportation of the house. The home is primarily composed of 3 blocks surrounded by an envelope, so the house can merge with surrounding nature through its open spaces and big windows. The house can also be disassembled into smaller pieces to fit in the size of one container.
