24 Years of Excellence: AUI Celebrates its Anniversary
On Wednesday, January 16, 2019, Al Akhawayn University celebrated its 24th anniversary. On 16 January 1995, the late King Hassan II inaugurated Al Akhawayn University. After its official founding in 1993 by Royal Decree, His Majesty's vision of an American-style Liberal Arts, English language university was finally achieved. That year the University received its first cohort consisting of only 289 students, but has now grown to over 2,000 students in recent years. AUI is now the first non-US NECHE accredited university in Africa, consistently hosts over 2,000 students with over 4,000 graduated alumni, and has multiplied its academic offerings while serving as a model to other national universities.
As the first university of its kind in Morocco, AUI has continued to set a high standard of academic and institutional excellence for other Universities in the region to model themselves after. The University has been the archetype for countless universities, and continues to grow by increasing the number of academic programs it provides, increasing its international profile, and constantly improving its administrative and academic quality and efficiency. AUI continues to be an institutional beacon of excellence for not only Morocco, Africa and the Arab world, but the rest of the world as well. On this 24th Anniversary of the opening of Morocco's premier institution of higher education, it's fair to say that His Majesty the late King Hassan II would be proud of what Al Akhawayn University has become, and how His vision has truly come to fruition.
