Presidential Interns Feature Series: Vol. 6

01.16.2019

The 6th edition of the Presidential Interns Feature Series, and first of the new semester, is Sarina Leon. Sarina is working as an intern for the Center for Learning Excellence (CLE) and she is the coordinator of the Writing Center, a branch of the CLE. She is from Seattle, Washington and graduated from Franklin University Switzerland in Lugano, Switzerland where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in History with an emphasis on modern Palestinian history and a minor in Comparative Cultural and Literature Studies in August 2018.

Given her interest in higher education and desire to work as a professor in the future, the opportunity to work in a tutoring center on an international campus while simultaneously being able to study Arabic was the perfect fit for Sarina. Having known previous Presidential Interns that went to her University, AUI’s Presidential Intern Program just made sense.

During her time here Sarina is looking forward to being able to improve her Arabic, both MSA and Darija, as well as getting to know the virtues and vices of the community through volunteering with NoVA.

After completing the AUI PiP program she hopes to gain more experience in a gender equality NGO before enrolling in a graduate program in MENA Gender studies. The opportunity to become familiar with the intricacies of a new international campus has been one of Sarina’s favorite things since arriving to Ifrane, as well as experiences like going to the desert in Merzouga. While here Sarina would like to help turn the Writing Center into a comfortable and productive environment where all students on campus feel like they are welcome to seek help. She would also like to create a proper dialogue surrounding topics such as safe sex, sexual harassment and assault on campus and in Morocco as a whole.
