India Day at AUI
Last week AUI hosted an “India Day” event centered on the history, culture, beauty and importance of Indian culture. The event was spread out over two days and saw the attendance of Al Akhawayn University’s President Driss Ouaouicha as well as India’s Ambassador to Morocco, Her Excellency Dr. Kheya Bhattacharya. The first day of the event occurred on the evening of Sunday, December 2nd, and included a Hindi Show that featured song and dance performances from members of the Association Nationale d’Amitié Maroc-Asiatique, also known as ANAMA. ANAMA aims to develop the bonds of friendship that unite the peoples of Morocco and Asia and to promote, provoke, consolidate, reinforce and help the exchanges between the peoples of Morocco and Asia in all fields, particularly cultural, artistic, human, scientific and economic matters.
On Monday, the India Day events kicked off with an Official Opening that included a welcoming address by President Driss Ouaouicha where the President thanked the Ambassador, her staff and colleagues for coming to AUI, and talked about the openness and willingness of AUI to interact and accept other cultures within the University. Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Kheya Bhattacharya then addressed the attendees at the meeting, and talked about the good nature of the relationship between Morocco and India, as well as the similarities between the two cultures. Ambassador Bhattacharya then presented the President and VPSA, Dr. Moncef Lahlou with gifts, and she was given an AUI welcome package.
In addition to the performances done by ANAMA, Moroccan singer Nasr Megri also performed a few songs, including both Moroccan and Hindi music. During this time there was also an exhibit held with paintings, traditional clothing, art, creations, music and music videos, Indian food, various cultural exhibits and brochures in Building 4. After the performances, everyone gathered in the Auditorium of Building 4 to watch various films and video clips about Ghandi, including his sayings, quotes and the story of his life.
