Presidential Interns Feature Series: Vol. 3

The third of the AUI Presidential Internship Program features is Nabeelah Muhammad. Nabeelah is interning in the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (OIRE). She was born and raised in the Washington DC area, and graduated from American University in Washington DC with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and Arab World Studies in 2017.

Given her academic background and having studied abroad at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates in 2016, it only made sense for Nabeelah to come work in the MENA region to further her career and become more of an expert on the region in which she has studied so extensively. Her desire to continue learning about the MENA region and the beautiful, rich history and culture of Morocco made it the perfect place to do so. Prior to coming to AUI, Nabeelah worked in a consulting firm and worked in project management.

One of Nabeelah’s goals during her time here is to improve her research method skills, such as surveys and focus groups, and the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness is the perfect place to do so. In addition to her professional goals, she wants to build on her years of studying Modern Standard Arabic in school and learn Darija to hopefully reach a conversational level of understanding of the language.

After completing this internship at AUI, Nabeelah would like to continue working in the field of monitoring and evaluation, and enroll in a Master’s Degree program focusing on qualitative research methods. So far her favorite part of Morocco has been the constant challenge of living in a new environment with a completely different culture than what she grew up around, and learning how to navigate through life in a place where there is a constant language barrier. Traditional Moroccan culture, architecture, and art are some of the most fascinating things she has seen, and is constantly in awe of it all. During her time here, she would like to see students feel more comfortable giving feedback and providing solutions. She would like to help create an environment where they don’t feel like they’ll be reprimanded for doing so, and help give them a voice.
