“Social Media Reconsidered”: AUI Hosts Symposium on Social Media and its Implications for News and Politics

The Moroccan British Society, the University of Cambridge and the British Council held a social medium symposium at AUI March 19. There, researchers, academics and practitioners discussed social media’s impact on society, communication, enterprise and politics, especially in Morocco, which is home to the Middle East/North African region’s fastest growing social media communities. Participants also examined the history and future of social media, as well as social media’s effects on the Arabic-speaking world, activism, journalism and marketing. Symposium attendees also discussed risks and opportunities presented by social media, including considerations regarding privacy, copyright and ownership.

Speakers came from Morocco, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, and included Nathan Towne of the University of New England, Sarah Zaaimi, Ella McPherson, Anas Rahimi and Piet Kommers.
