Al Akhawayn Alumna Wins Seat in New Moroccan Parliament

Ifrane, December 14, 2011 –Al Akhawayn alumna Jalila Morsli (Classes of 2003 and 2006) has been elected to serve in the Moroccan parliament. A member of the Moroccan political party the National Rally of Independents, Mosrsli is one of 60 women who nationally won a seat in the Moroccan elections of November 25, among a total of 395 contested seats.

“At the root of this achievement is a simple powerful driver: the extra-curricular activities at Al Akhawayn University. I consider my experience at Al Akhawayn a microcosm of real world experience, through which I had to face and overcome the challenges I lived along with other students,” said Morsli in an interview with Al Akhawayn University.

Jalila Morsli is the first Al Akhawayn University graduate to be elected to the Moroccan parliament. She received her bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Al Akhawayn University in 2003, and a Master degree in International Studies and Diplomacy in 2006. She was actively involved in student-run clubs, in particular the Diplomacy Club, of which she was president in fall 2004 and spring 2005, and the Future Entrepreneurs club in 2002.

The 2011 elections in Morocco were conducted following two types of list, local and national. 305 seats were allocated for the local lists spread over 92 electoral districts, while the national list consists of 90 seats, putting the total number of deputies at 395.
