French (FRN)

University Core Curriculum

FRN 1205 Consolidating French 2 (1-4)
Registration by placement test only.

This lower intermediate level course is both intensive and extensive. It meets five days a week for the duration of the semester and provides an active and systematic review of basic grammatical structures and problems. All four language skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, are equally stressed in this course.


FRN 1208 French for Academic Purposes I 2(1-2)
Registration by placement test only.

This upper-intermediate level course is designed to develop facility in conversing and writing in idiomatic French. It offers an in-depth review of the French language structures: grammar, verb conjugation, writing methods, practice of summaries, essays, oral explanations of texts, etc.


FRN 1209 French for Academic Purposes II 2(1-2)
Registration by placement test only

This course is meant as a continuation of FRN 1208 and is open for students who have already acquired basic oral fluency and written accuracy in the French language. It offers students the opportunity to further polish and refine all four language skills, especially writing which is heavily stressed in the course.


FRN 1301 Beginning French I 3(2-2)
Registration by placement test only.

Not open for Moroccan students.
The course is meant as a communicative introduction for beginners to the language of everyday situations. Special emphasis on understanding and communicating, with attention paid to the production of sounds. Some basic grammar and written work is included.


FRN 1302 Beginning French II 3(2-2)
Pre-requisite: FRN 1301 or instructor's consent

Not open for Moroccan students.
Emphasizes speaking and understanding. Grammar is incorporated to allow for more rapid progress in the language. Students work on expanding their vocabulary and reading simple French texts.


FRN 2210 Advanced French Writing and Speaking Skills 2 (1-2)

Alearner-centered course, for students completely at ease with all four language skills. The course develops and improves students' ability to express themselves in correct standard French, both written and spoken, using authentic material drawn from the world of business, the press, and other media. Aparticular emphasis is put on the necessary tools that enable students to give power, coherence, and polish to the numerous texts and presentations that they will be asked to give in their professional life. Registration by placement test only.


FRN 2300 Intermediate French 3(2-2)
Pre-requisite: FRN 1302 or placement test results

Not open for Moroccan students.
This course consolidates vocabulary, speaking and understanding abilities. Reading materials are expanded to include more complex narratives and short poetry. The course offers an insight into the culture and history of the Francophone world within the framework of language work and using authentic materials.


FRN 3301 Writing for the Professions in French 3(3-0)
Pre-requisite: Junior Classification

Advanced writing for industry, administration, and the corporate world. Emphasizes proposals, technical reports and position papers, and includes the usual protocols for inter-office memos and letters. The course will also examine conventions of politeness using electronic media. This course does not meet French language core program requirements.

FRN 3310 Contemporary Morocco in the Francophone Press 3(3 - 0)
Pre-requisites: Junior Classification and placement test

This course does not meet French language core program requirements. This course, for students with excellent French language skills (all skills), is an in-depth study of articles, reviews, case studies, etc, from the Francophone press about Morocco. In addition to total fluency in the language, the course requires mastery of text analysis, summary techniques, and discourse analysis. Students will prepare oral and written presentations and an end-of-term research paper for the course.


FRN 3320 French for the Professions 3 (3-0)
This course does not meet non-BA French language core program requirements.
Pre-requisite : FRN 2310, or instructor’s consent.

This course aims at giving students the necessary linguistic background in order for them to perform better in the varied business situations they will encounter during their professional life. It involves studying recent business articles on current affairs and articulating the concepts which are central to some business situations. It also analyses in details themes like the business cultures, the importance of managing the information flow in companies and the decision making process. Students are asked to summarize English articles in French (cross-reduction) and to write different kinds of business correspondence texts. A Moroccan dimension is always given to all the above mentioned points.
