Arabic (ARA)

Courses Designed for Non-Native Speakers of Arabic (ARA)

ARA 1300: Moroccan Colloquial Arabic 3(3-0)

This course introduces non-native students to structures in Moroccan Arabic necessary for everyday interaction with native speakers. This course may not be used to satisfy the undergraduate core curriculum requirements in Arabic.

This is a Language Requirement for Non-Native Speakers in the SHSS


ARA 1511: Beginning Arabic I  3(3-0)
ARA 1512: Beginning Arabic II 3(3-0)
This level is for students with little or no prior experience with Arabic. Students who have completed the two courses are expected to:
• Participate in simple conversations
• Read and write simple, correct, short texts of
Modern Standard Arabic
• Acquire vocabulary of about 1000 words
• Acquire word processing skills in Arabic

Together, these two courses carry 10 credits and consist of 192 contact hours. Typically, in addition to all units of Alif Baa, students complete 13 units in Al-Kitaab fii Tacallum al-cArabiyya, Part 1.


ARA 2411: Intermediate Arabic I 3(3-0)
ARA 2412: Intermediate Arabic II 3(3-0)

Students at this level will have studied Arabic for approximately 2 to 3 standard semesters. Students who have completed the two courses are expected to:
• Be able to understand main ideas in texts dealing with basic personal and social needs
• Write Arabic for various basic purposes
• Narrate and describe basic situations
• Handle a number of interactive and social situations
• Be familiar with the Moroccan colloquial variety of Arabic

Together, these two courses carry 8 credits and consist of 160 contact hours. Typically, students complete 13 units in Al-Kitaab fii Tacallum al-cArabiyya, Parts 1 & 2.


ARA 3411: Advanced Arabic I 3(3-0)
ARA 3412: Advanced Arabic II 3(3-0)

This level is designed for students who have accumulated approximately 4 to 5 standard semesters of instruction in Modern Standard Arabic. Students who have completed the two courses are expected to:

• Strengthen their reading skills and vocabulary
• Refine and expand their knowledge of sentence construction
• Gain additional cultural knowledge
• Attain advanced proficiency in speaking and listening comprehension of contemporary materials
 in various fields
• Be familiar with the Moroccan colloquial variety of Arabic

Together, these two courses carry 8 credits and consist of 160 contact hours. Typically, students complete 13 units in Al-Kitaab fii Tacallum al-cArabiyya, Parts 2 & 3.
ARA 4311: Advanced Arabic for Specific Purposes 3(3-0)

This course is designed for students with very advanced language skills. It focuses on specific aspects of oral and written communication to be determined according to needs and available resources.
This is a Language Requirement for Non-Native Speakers in the SHSS


ARA 4611: Journalistic and Literary Arabic
Pre-requisite: ARA 3312 or equivalent

14 June – 23 July
This course is designed for students who have studied at an advanced level for at least two
semesters. It emphasizes the development of skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking through the use of authentic journalistic and literary materials and guest lectures.

By the end of the course, students are expected to:
• Read and understand literary texts originally written in Arabic
• Learn specialized vocabulary and idiomatic expressions
• Improve reading pace and reading comprehension
• Compare, analyse, and argue
• Write on journalistic and literary topics

This course carries 6 credits and consists of 120 contact hours. Teaching materials consist of primary source texts in addition to materials prepared by AUI faculty.

Please note that a minimum of five students is needed for the course to be offered. A decision will be communicated to applicants by April 30th.
